I walked along the walls of Kumbhalgarh longer than I planned 

I had not planned to spend much time at Kumbhalgarh Fort. It was one of those places I had added to my Rajasthan itinerary because I knew it was important. However, I thought a couple of hours would be enough. I wanted to see the fort, take some photographs, enjoy the views and then continue with the rest of my day.

That plan changed as soon as I started walking along the walls. What I expected to be a quick visit turned into one of the longest walks of my trip. I kept telling myself I would turn back at the next point, but there was always another stretch of wall, another view or another interesting corner that made me continue.

My first impression of Kumbhalgarh Fort

The first thing that caught my attention was the size of the fort. Kumbhalgarh sits among the Aravalli hills, and its enormous walls seem to follow the shape of the mountains. From certain points, the wall appears to disappear around one hill before showing up again in the distance.

I had seen pictures of Kumbhalgarh before visiting, but they did not really prepare me for the experience of standing there. The old stone walls looked rugged and strong. The gateways and watchtowers gave me a glimpse of how important the fort must have been centuries ago. Even before I started exploring properly, I knew I would need more time than I had originally allowed.

I started walking without a plan at Kumbhalgarh

I began walking along the wall without deciding how far I wanted to go. At first, I was doing what I normally do at historical places. I stopped at interesting spots, took photographs and read whatever information was available. However, after a while, I stopped thinking about what I was supposed to see next.

I simply followed the wall. Some parts of the path were easy, while others were uneven and required a little more attention. The slower pace actually made the walk more enjoyable. Every turn offered something slightly different. Sometimes I could see the old structures inside the fort. At other points, the view opened towards the surrounding hills. 

Kumbhalgarh’s Aravalli views made me stop

The views were probably the biggest reason I stayed so long. Kumbhalgarh is surrounded by the Aravallis, and seeing those hills from the fort walls gave the visit a completely different feeling. There was something peaceful about looking across the landscape from such a historic place.

I took plenty of photographs, but eventually I stopped reaching for my phone every few minutes. Instead, I stood there and looked. The hills stretched into the distance, and the wind moving across the walls made the place feel far removed from the busy towns and roads below. 

Kumbhalgarh’s history felt more real while walking

I knew that Kumbhalgarh was an important fort in Mewar’s history. It is also famously associated with Maharana Pratap, who was born here. But reading about history and standing inside an old fort are two different things.

As I walked along the walls, I started imagining what the fort might have looked like when it was full of people rather than visitors. Soldiers would have watched the surrounding hills from these walls. The gateways would have been important points of entry and defence. The buildings inside the fort would have been part of everyday life.

Staying near Kumbhalgarh makes sense

If you are planning to visit the fort, I would suggest giving yourself more time than you think you need. There are several hotels in Kumbhalgarh where travellers can stay close to the fort and explore the area without rushing back to another city. Staying nearby also gives you more flexibility if you want to visit the fort early in the day or explore other places around Kumbhalgarh.

For me, that extra flexibility would have been useful because my carefully planned schedule didn’t survive the first half of my visit. Once I started walking, I didn’t want to keep checking the time.

When I finally turned back from Kumbhalgarh Fort

Eventually, I realised that I had been walking for much longer than planned. My feet were tired, I was ready for something to eat, and I knew I couldn’t keep exploring forever. Still, turning back felt slightly disappointing. I had gone from planning a short visit to wishing I had another few hours.

That is probably what I liked most about Kumbhalgarh. It didn’t feel like a place I had to rush through. The fort rewarded patience. You could spend time looking at the architecture, learn about its history, photograph the views or simply walk without having a particular plan in mind.

Final thoughts

If you are travelling through Rajasthan, don’t make Kumbhalgarh a rushed stop between other destinations. Give yourself enough time to explore it properly. Staying at one of the hotels in Kumbhalgarh can make that much easier, especially if you want to experience the fort without constantly watching the clock. I went to Kumbhalgarh expecting to stay for several hours. Instead, I walked along its walls much longer than I planned. Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing.
