Dashcam footage shows the moment a door flew off a roof rack into traffic following behind

Drivers on a busy road had a lucky escape yesterday after a door flew off a roof rack, narrowly missing cars and a van following behind.

The dramatic incident was caught on camera via a dashcam in the vehicle directly behind it.

It took place at 10.40am yesterday on the A380 near Newton Abbot in Devon.

Kelly McIntosh and her partner, from Exeter, who does not wish to be named, were in the car directly behind.

They believe that whoever was driving the white Golf “could have killed people.”

Not only does a panelled door and a roof rack hurtle towards other vehicles, but the driver immediately brakes causing their car to a stop in the second lane.

Miss McIntosh told Devon Live: “Do you know when you get that feeling that something bad is going to happen?

“We could see that the door was loosely tied down with one blue bungee chord and we saw it go into the road.

“That is when the door flew off, over the van, and into the river. Part of the roof rack also went into the road and we had to swerve to avoid it.

She added: “That van driver is the luckiest person on the planet. We were in absolute fear and looked behind us expecting to see other cars crashing.”

According to the couple, the door seen in the clip above, was made of wood and contained glass panels.

The couple say they have been involved in a collision that wasn’t their fault before, outside the Tesco super store in Digby.

They say the experience has made them very vigilant on the roads.

On the incident, Miss McIntosh added: “I have never seen anything like it.”
