Earn 5% back at gas stations with all Chase Freedom cards in February

This article is brought to you by the Personal Finance Insider team. It has not been reviewed, approved, or otherwise endorsed by any of the issuers listed. Some of the offers you see on the page are from our partners like Citi and American Express, but our coverage is always independent. Terms apply to the offers listed on this page.

Here’s a nice surprise if you’re a Chase Freedom cardholder — there’s a new offer to earn 5% cash back (5x Chase Ultimate Rewards points) at gas stations for the month of February as part of Chase’s “Month of More” promotion. Every flavor of Chase Freedom card is eligible — Chase Freedom Flex℠, Chase Freedom Unlimited®, the legacy Chase Freedom®
card (no longer open to new applicants), and even the Chase Freedom® Student credit card.

The 5% back is capped at a maximum of $150 in spending, so the most you could earn with this bonus is $7.50 (750 Chase Ultimate Rewards points) per card. Every little bit counts, though, especially if you’re not already earning bonus rewards from one of the best credit cards for gas purchases.

As part of the same promotion, Freedom cardholders can also earn more cash back at participating retailers when they shop through Chase, and get a 10% discount on select gift cards.

Chase Freedom 5% gas station bonus

To activate 5% cash back at gas stations, enter your last name, last four digits of your Freedom card, and zip code on the Chase “My Bonus” page. If you have more than one card, just enroll each separately.

You’ll need to register your card by the end of February to earn 5% back on up to $150 in combined gas station purchases made from February 1 to February 28, 2021. Once you’ve reached that limit, you’ll earn your regular rate for non-bonused spending (1.5% back with the Chase Freedom Unlimited® and 1% for all other Freedom cards).

Gas stations often sell much more than fuel, so even if you don’t drive, you might still make eligible purchases — for example, the gas station in my small town doubles as the only local 24-hour convenience store. It’s worth activating the bonus just in case.

Keep in mind this promotion is completely different from the 5% cash back rotating bonus categories available to Chase Freedom Flex℠ and Chase Freedom® cardholders. These also require activation (through your online Chase account or at chasebonus.com), after which you can earn 5% back (5x points) on up to $1,500 in combined category spending each quarter (then 1%).

In the first quarter of 2021, the Chase Freedom 5x categories are wholesale clubs, select streaming services, and internet, cable, and phone services, and you’ll need to activate by March 14 to earn the bonus.
