Travel to the Jaén province of Andalucia, Spain – Episode 807

Travel to the Jaén province of Andalucia, Spain (Podcast)

Hear about travel to the Jaén province of Andalucia Spain as the Amateur Traveler talks to Molly Sears-Piccavey who lives in Andalucia.

Molly says, “Jaén is a province in western Andalucia that is not truly very identified or associated with tourism. If we take southern Spain the western aspect of Andalucia which is Granada, Cordoba, Jaén, and Almería are not as touristic potentially as the side of Andalucia which is wherever Malaga and Seville are. Cordoba and Granada are quite nicely frequented because of their Muslim architecture such as the mosque or their Alhambra Palace, but Jaén is inland and a tiny bit further more away. And a lot of people do not handle to uncover Jaén and I believe Jaén has a ton to offer the customer.”

“The factor that sticks out most in my head is the olive trees. It’s the place in Europe with most density of olive trees, and they make clearly a lot of olive oil. When you vacation to Jaén, Anywhere you glimpse, you’re just seeing olive trees and even on the street to Jaén as very well as just olive trees as significantly as you can see. It’s also a area that has a massive quantity of castles and fortresses. They declare to be the place with the most castles in Europe. Burgalimar which is in Baños de la Encina is the oldest castle in Europe and it is so well worth viewing.”

“They phone Jaén the land of battles and castles but I imagine they’re missing the olive oil so it need to be battles, castles, and olive oil.”

For over 200 several years, Jaén was the border involving Catholic Spain and Moorish Spain, consequently the amount of castles and the walled hilltop towns.

Molly starts off us in the funds of Jaén province which is the town of Jaén. We start in the stunning cathedral of Jaén which may perhaps look common as it was utilised as a product for several cathedrals in the new planet. It is proposed as a UNESCO web-site since of this importance.

We then climb the hill for a perspective of the metropolis to the Castle of Santa Catalina and the Parador of Jaén (the nationwide resort chain) which sit facet by aspect with a see of the city and of the 65 million olive trees in the length.

The other quit you ought to make in Jaén is the Arab Bathes which are the greatest of the outdated hammams from the Moorish rule. They sit down below the palace of an ex-Viceroy to Peru which residences an artwork museum and a record museum.

We transfer from Jaén throughout the valley to the twin towns of Úbeda and Baeza which are a joint UNESCO web site for their structures developed in the Spanish Renaissance model. Úbeda has a selection of old buildings about a huge sq. (Vázquez de Molina Square) which include an aged palace which is now a Parador. There is also an ornate funerary chapel for 1 of the much more distinguished families of Úbeda, and the Basílica de Santa María de los Reales Alcázares church.

Baeza is an old College town. The aged university is now the superior college but one particular of the old palaces has been turned into a new international university. Baeza has a quieter whitewashed Andalucian city feel with small streets and flower boxes.

Molly also recommends browsing Baños de la Encina and the Burgalimar Castle as well as Alcalá la Real and its Fortaleza de La Mota. These metropolitan areas ended up even nearer to the border with Moorish Grenada so they experienced the additional significant fortifications.

Jaén also has 4 pure parks with a variety of pursuits which includes hiking, but Molly who prospects foods tours focuses us more on destinations we can get a good meal.

Jaén is a attractive area of Spain that deserves more tourism than it gets… but you might not want to pay a visit to in the warmth of the summertime as I did lately on a push trip.

Patron Jeff commented on Vacation to the South of Iceland – Newbie Traveler Episode 802

The South Iceland episode brought back again so quite a few reminiscences of Iceland. One particular of my recollections was the homes to the “hidden people” (gnomes, elves etcetera.) which are rock piles wherever the roadways are designed around. Just one entertaining exercise I savored was pet dog sledding on Myrdalsjokull Glacier. Ultimately, a stop by to the Westmann Islands is terrific but you could take into consideration a sightseeing flight of Surtsey Island. This island emerged in a volcanic eruption in November 1963 from underneath the ocean. I never know if it however retains the designation of being the latest island on earth to be established. It’s a scientific reserve with access by permit only, so a sightseeing flight is the only way to see it. They are studying plant and animal lifestyle colonizing the island. An additional reward was also the sights of Iceland’s countryside and coastline from the air such as the Westmann Islands.

Forgot to remark about the very hot puppies.  Icelanders like their warm canine (pylsa). You can get them

almost everywhere, bacon wrapped etcetera. The very best pet in Reykjavik is at Baejarins Beztu a smaller 10×10 shack designed well known by then President Clinton stopping by and owning a sizzling pet dog.  It’s the “Pink’s” of Reykjavik.
